Medicinal uses: include Asthma, Colds, Cough, Herpes, warts, and snake bites.

Religious use: used to ward off the evil eye or negative influences.  In the Caribbean, the leaves are hung at the homes' entryways or as decorative arrangements.  The leaves when dried take on unique shapes and color variations.  These leaves are offered to Obatala and Oya.
